What Is Coaching?

  • Coaching is a process that helps determine:
    - Where you are...
    - Where you would like to be...
    - How to get from here to there.

  • Coaching is driven by questions that help you discover needed insights.
    - You are expert on your life...
    - Your coach is the expert on asking you the right questions so that you discover how to move forward.

  • Coaching is action oriented.
    - You decide on the actions that will move you forward, and how you would like to be held accountable.
    - Your coach provides the accountability to keep you moving forward.

  • Coaching plus Counseling.
    - Coaching is light on advise-giving, and heavy on moving clients to discover their own action plans. However, because of Dave's background in Pastoral Counseling, he blends the counseling element into his coaching, where appropriate.

  • Coaching is Forward Focused
    - Coaching is not primarily interested in fixing the past, but rather understanding the present and changing for the future.

  • Coaching for Inside-Out Change
    - Personal change involves internal change (heart, motives, attitudes, perspectives, etc) as well as external change (behaviors, reactions, responses, actions). Coaching moves us toward the discipline of productive external actions, while at the same time addressing the internal aspects that drive our external actions. The blend of addressing both internal and external elements leads to authentic and lasting change.

How Does Coaching Work?

Coaching is usually done on the phone, but can also be done in person by special request. The phone gives greater convenience and flexibility of scheduling, as well as providing a more comfortable coaching environment. Experience tells us that clients will often be more open, honest, and personal when coaching over the phone. You choose a time on Dave's Coaching Schedule and confirm it by email.

  • A session would normally be between 30-60 minutes.

  • The agenda is client-driven, and coach supported.

  • Your coach may make available assessment tools, and systematic approaches to help you work toward your coaching goals.

  • Your coach holds you accountable for agreed upon goals and actions from prior sessions.

  • Your coach listens deeply to your words, thoughts, and deep heart.

  • Your coach asks powerful questions to tap your personal resources.

  • Your coach gives an unbiased reflection of what he sees.

  • Each session yields a specific and measurable action plan.
